As we get older, things seem to get a little harder. It’s not quite as easy getting up from the couch as it used to be. Your knees may ache a little bit more. It’s a little harder to see when there isn’t a lot of light. That’s just part of the aging process for most folks. And sometimes we just need a little more help.
There is a wide range of support available depending on how much help mom or dad needs. This can be something as simple as having a Personal Care Assistant come in to the home a few days a week for a few hours and range all the way up to skilled nursing care (a medical facility commonly called a nursing home).
Assisted Living communities are supportive living communities that are staffed 24 hours a day with trained staff. They are licensed and regulated by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. Assisted living communities generally provide private apartments, meals, activities and other services.

Assisted living communities provide many of the same services that have historically been provided in nursing homes. However, living in an assisted living community is more like living in your home instead of living in a clinical nursing home where more medical care can be provided.
In an assisted living community, you have your own private apartment. Many nursing homes still utilize what is called a semi-private model—that means, you and another person share a bedroom and are generally separated only by a privacy curtain.
In an assisted living community, you have your own private bathroom. Many nursing homes have a half-bath you share with your roommate and then have a separate communal shower room down the hall.
There are a number of ways to pay for assisted living however Medicare is not one of them. Medicare does not cover any non-medical care (and that includes most nursing home stays).
The most common way to pay for assisted living is to pay privately. However, many people have purchased long term care insurance policies that cover assisted living services. In addition, many veterans and their spouses are eligible for benefits called the Veterans Aid & Attendance benefit that cover assisted living costs as well.
Heritage Park Village works with a number of long term care insurance companies and our local Veterans Services Officer to assist with qualification for these benefits and can assist you through that process.
